To use SafeDNS on your Windows computer with a dynamic public IP without the SafeDNS Agent, follow these easy steps: 1) point DNS traffic to our servers 2) install and configure ddclient software.

1. Redirect your DNS requests to our DNS server.

You need to change your network settings as described in SafeDNS set up guide on Windows 10 to start using our DNS.

2. Install and configure ddclient software

During installation enter the name of your computer in the "Client hostname" field to distinguish it from other your computers or networks. If you have several networks with dynamic addresses, then names of computers with installed ddclient should be different.

In the "Dynamic DNS server" field, enter www.safedns.com

In the "Connection" field, select HTTPS

In the “Dynamic DNS protocol” field, leave dyndns2

In the "Dynamic DNS username" field, enter your login (the same as you are using on our service).

In the "Dynamic DNS password" field, enter your account password.

Click Next button.

Click Next again to finish installation of ddclient.

After installation you can check if the IP address is successfully bound to service or not in ddclient.log file. There should be a line like this:

Oct 14 12:49:12 somehostname ddclient[4105]: SUCCESS:  updating somehostname: good: IP address set to 188.17.179.211

On Windows 7 you can find log files here:

  • C:\windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\ddclient.log

  • C:\windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Local\ddclient.log

  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\ddclient.log

For Windows XP:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Application Data\ddclient.log

  • C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\ddclient.log

  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\ddclient.log

Also, you can check that your computer is correctly identified by SafeDNS in Settings - Nets tab. In the DD Client section you will see the entry with the hostname you specified during ddclient installation.

In case something went wrong, uninstall ddclient, delete the ddclient.cache file, which is in the same directory as ddclient.log, restart a computer and reinstall ddclient.
